Orthodontics is the treatment of irregularities in the teeth and jaws, most commonly addressing alignment and occlusion issues. Perhaps the most well-known treatment method used in orthodontics is braces, of which there are several different options. Whether you are interested in orthodontics for yourself or your child, please don't hesitate to ask for more information on available treatment options. Dr. Costello and his team are happy to perform examinations and refer patients to an experienced orthodontist that is just the right fit!

How will I know when or if my child should begin orthodontic treatment?
If you are questioning whether your child should be starting orthodontic treatment, please do not hesitate to ask. The appropriate age to begin orthodontics varies greatly from one child to the next. There are many factors involved when making that decision, including spacing of the teeth, bite, speech or swallowing irregularities, and the child's oral hygiene.

There are also different treatment philosophies in orthodontics. Some orthodontists choose early intervention with the possibility of two separate phases of treatment, while others wait until the majority of permanent teeth have erupted to even begin treatment. Neither philosophy is right or wrong, and the selected approach often depends on the individual child's needs. Dr. Costello will monitor your child's growth and development by oral examination and X-rays. When the time is right, he will refer you to an orthodontist who will be the right fit for you and your child.
Am I too old for braces?
Absolutely not! Times have changed. If you were never offered the opportunity to have braces during your youth, there is no reason you can't get them now. There are new technologies that can decrease treatment time and reduce the visibility of braces. For example, SureSmile® can decrease the amount of time you wear your braces. Instead of bending an archwire by hand, a SureSmile® doctor uses advanced 3-D imaging, virtual simulations and robotically bent archwires customized for your treatment. When the SureSmile® wire is inserted into your brackets, each tooth moves more directly to the prescribed position. Your teeth do not move faster with SureSmile® - they move with precision that was never before possible. Or, Invisalign® might be your preferred option. Invisalign® uses a custom-made series of aligners created for you and only you. These aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth. Wearing the aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place, based on the exact movements your dentist or orthodontist plans out for you. There are no metal brackets to attach, and no wires to tighten. You just pop in a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks until your treatment is complete.
